Interested in the family of Francis Lord Cottington, born 1579, Ambassador to the Court at Madrid, 1629-30, Chancellor and Under Treasurer of the Exchequer to Charles II., 1629-42, Master of the Wards, 1635-41, Lord High Treasurer, 1643-46, created Baron Cottington of Hamworth (i.e., Hanworth), Middlesex, 1631, married 1622, Anne, widow of Sir Robert Bertt, daughter of Sir William Meredith of London. He died 19 Jun 1652 at Valladolid, his wife and children having pre-deceased him.
Francis was one of five children of Philipp Cottington (settled at Godminster Manor near Bruton (Abbey), Pitcombe (parish), Somerset in 1569) and Jane Biflett (married 1572) including Elizabeth, Maurice, and James, who were older than himself, and Edward, who was two years his junior. He was trained in the household of Sir Edward Stafford which prepared him for diplomatic service.
Interested to know what relation, if any, the Cottingtons had with the (1) FitzHardings of Berkley who resided at Bruton and Hanworth; (2) the Hydes of Dinton, Wilts; (3) the Hydes of Hinton Daubney, Hants; and/or (4) the Carews of Haccombe, Devon?
Also interested in the family of Maurice Cottington, born 24 Jan 1602, married Joan Jenes and had two sons Phillip and Francis, who became the heirs of their uncle Francis.
Maurice and Joan also had a daughter, Anne, who married 22 Jul 1635, Martin Davis of Westminster. Very interested to know more about this Anne Cottington. Did she marry again and, if so, (1) who did she marry, (2) when and (3) where.
