I have a rather distant link to Coulson's of Bradford, Ontario. My grandmother, Edna Curry, was born and raised in Bradford. Her aunt (her father's older sister), Elizabeth Smith Curry b. 1856, married William Coulson. They had a son, Frederick Coulson, who married Sadie Adams. They had four children:Garfield, Russel, Lydia and Doreen.
Many of my ancestors are buried in Coulson's Hill Cemetery.
I have an old newspaper article from the Bradford Witness, August 7, 1857 that says that Coulson's Hill derived its name from Mr. John Coulson, who donated the land for a church and cemetery in the mid-1800's - perhaps this is your John? The paper also states that in 1822 a John Coulson took up Lot 15, Concession 11 in West Gwillimbury.
Hope this helps.
