Hi Sandy,
I think I may have found the beginning of your Thomas and Mary Coulson family on the IGI all with father: Thomas COULSON, mother: Mary ? but couldn't find a marriage for this couple.
Francis [c] 17th May 1851, Slingsby
Hannah [c] 17th may 1851, Slingsby
John [c] 19th Nov 1854, Slingsby
Registration began after this time so the rest of the children may not be on the parish registers.

I am still researching John COULSON, [b] 1838, Slingsby, illegitimate son of Mary COULSON, father on his death certificate is Thomas Mitchell KENDALL or RENDALL, {having trouble with my Ks & Rs}. Mary's parents were Robert COULSON & Elizabeth ? Mary was born in 1807, Slingsby. Her two brothers Jonathon 1797 and William 1800 were both born at Kilburn. Mary died a few weeks after John was born and he was raised by his Coulson grandparents and unmarried uncle William. William was a schoolmaster on the 1851 census. I have sent for John's birth and marriage certificates so hope they can tell me his fathers name. Best wishes
