Hello Coupal family; I was reading the book "Land of a Thousand Sorrows" by Francois-Mauriece Lapailleur and I came across an interesting story about Lareine Coupal. As you probably already know he was a Canadien Patriot unjustly sentenced to Australian prison in 1840 aboard the HMS Buffalo. The story reads as this: Lareine was in the woods to say his prayers and it seems he had one of his fits and quite a while afterwards he got on the road to the settlement. Instead of coming home, he went farther and fell into a swamp. He says that a woman with a white scarf on her head appeared to him and spoke to him(in French):"This is not a good spot to be-it's not the right way." She helped him get up from this bad spot and led him back in the direction of the settlement and left him in a very good spot, asking him if he could make it back. He told her he could. On leaving she told him to call Bourbon. Lareine indeed began to call Bourbon. I heard him myself as did several others but I was shut up in our rooms. Bourbon, DuCharme and Mr. Lanctot went there with little Roy and found Lareine lying in a convenient place covered with mud and definitely unable to stand up where he was. If one is to believe Lareine there is no doubt about it being a miracle because poor Lareine certainly could have been killed on the road he was taking, since if he had gone farther he would have fallen into the bay. -----My family is the DuCharmes and I collect stories related to these partriots. Please contact me if you are interested in more information. I find it fasinating. Sharon
