In 1996 I was advised by an expert in these matters that " the surname rendered Coupe or Cowpe should actually be rendered Couper or Cowper - hitherto the contraction mark for the suffix 'per' was not correctly transcribed."
Agnes Cowper wasprobably the daughter of Thomas COWPER of Garboldisham, Norfolk. From the Manorial Records of Knettishall, Suffolk, it is clear that her husband Reginald ELDRED died between 12Feb1515 & 23 Apr1516 having "farmed at Knettishall all his life" but Agnes (bornabout 1565?) didn't die until after 1533.There are passing references in those Records to Reginald's will but no copy of it has survived. Reginald was, I believe, a son (probably born around 1460) of Robert ELREDof Knettishall, Suffolk, who made his will (from which the spelling ELRED is taken) there on 20Mar1485/6 (proved 10Apr1486). It seems likely that Reginald & Agnes were married around 1485. Their children almost certainly included the following: Thomas, priest (will, Knettishall, 1547), Robert (will, Knettishall 1550/1), Nicholas, gent (will, Knettishall, 1566/7), John the elder, yeoman (will, Knettishall 1572) and John the youngerwho, in 1558, proved the will of his son John of New Buckenham, Norfolk (father of John of New Buckenham, London & Great Saxham (Suffolk), the Merchant & Traveller whose bust is in Great Saxham church). I have not been able to confirm from records here in the UK the belief that a John Eldredwas born/bapt. at Corby, Lincs in 1419, had a son Reginaldand died at Knettishall in 1489.
