Katherine J. "Kate/Katie" Covert wife of Samuel Gibbs Witt

I'm seeking the parents of Katherine J. "Kate/Katie" Covert who married Samuel Gibbs Witt 20 Jan 1886 in Jackson Co., MO. Kate was then age 22 (b. ca 1864) a resident of Clay Co., MO.

Samuel G. Witt was born 7 Mar 1862 in Platte Co., MO the son of William Hughes Witt and Eleanor Gibbs

There are Johnson Co., KS and Platte Co., MO censuses through 1930 for Samuel and Katie (Covert) Witt. They indicate she was born Sep 1863 in KS with father b. VA and mother born MO. She and Samuel both probably died in Johnson Co., KS (he before 1930 and she after 1930).

In the 1870 census for Monticello, Johnson Co., KS she is probably the Kate Covert age 6 b. KS in the household of Seth and Margaret Akins. Margaret does not seem to have been her mother as Seth Akins married a Margaret Willhite.

Perhaps her parents died as a result of the Civil War? There was a John S. Covert in the 10th KS Infantry but I've no evidence he was her father.

Any help appreciated.
