HARRISON SMITH WAS WELL KNOWN.
The funeral of HARRISON SMITH, who died on Monday, was held this morning at eleven o’clock, conducted by REV. J. A. BROWN of Batavia, and interment was made at Smith Branch cemetery. MR. SMITH was one of the earlier settlers and a veteran of the Civil War. He came to this section of Iowa when quite young and settled on or near the place where he died. At the opening of the Civil War he enlisted in Company D, of the Nineteenth Iowa Infantry, serving as first lieutenant and also held the position of Captain of the State Militia. MR. SMITH took a prominent part in the capture of JOHN KEPHART in June 1860. KEPHART had murdered a woman and two children in an emigrant wagon about two miles north of Batavia on Crow Creek. (Cedar?) MR. SMITH saw KEPHART about the time of the murder and after the discovery was the leader of the posse that followed him to Upland, Mo., where he was captured. Shortly after being returned to the Jefferson County jail KEPHART was taken by a mob and lynched near the scene of his crime.
He leaves to mourn his death seven children, three sons, H. E., A. P., and C. J., of Batavia, and four daughters, MRS. NORMAN RENO of Whittier, Cal., MRS. LIZZIE HARRISON of Belle Plain, Kansas, MRS. POWELSON and MISS CHINELEY SMITH of Batavia. The deceased was married twice and each of his helpmates have preceded him in death.

HUDSON FUNERAL WILL BE FRIDAY.
Batavia, Ia.---NELLIE WRENSHALL HUDSON, life-time resident of Jefferson County, passed away about 10 p.m. Tuesday at her home in Batavia. NELLIE WRENSHALL HUDSON, 85, was born May 6, 1876, on the home place north of Batavia. She was the daughter of WILLIAM and SARAH LONG SMITH. She war reared and educated in Jefferson County. In March, 1902, she was united in marriage to EDMOND HUDSON. The wedding took place at Fairfield. She is survived by one son, DEWEY HUDSON, Batavia; two daughters, MRS. AN “UN-NAMED” BURIAL GROUND, SW ¼, Sec. 5, Locust Grove Twp.
In July, 1962, in company with MR. JOHN ROBERT GOBBLE (SAR) of Idaho Falls, Idaho, formerly of Fairfield, we visited this place, on a farm now occupied by a MR. MILLER and his family. We found only one tombstone:
GRAY: S. A., wife of L. H. GRAY, Died Sept. 8, 1892, Aged 40 y. 7 m. 1 D.
MR. R. BRUCE GOBBLE of Fairfield seems to be of the opinion that other burials had been made at that place. MR. MILLER also stated that he had been told there were other graves nearby, but no traces exist and no other stones have been found. MR. and MRS. MILLER told us that MRS. GRAY has at least one son living, whose home is at Winterset, Iowa. He is now elderly, but was a small boy when his mother died. MR. GRAY had been in the habit of making occasional pilgrimages to visit his mother’s grave, and to paint and maintain the board fence which surrounds her grave. Compiler understood that the GRAY family have lived on the farm at the time of the passing of the wife and mother.
