CHARLES WM. COWEY - where before NC?
My g-g-g-grandfather was Chas Wm Cowey, b. I know not where. In the 1st U.S. Census in 1790, he was in NC, in what is now Martin Co.My line is through his son Chas Wm b. 1777 (don't know where), and his grandson -also Chas Wm - b. 1836 in Martin Co, NC.This 1836 C.W. was my g-grandfather, who came to TX early in the 1850's with a doctor's family and his bro Needham. His father had died in 1841 and his mother about 1852-3 (can't remember just now). All of the TX Cowey's are descended from C.W. - his nickname.
I have no idea where the elder Cowey came from, directly from the U.K. or from New England where the only group of early Cowey's was located. My brother (former history teacher) speculates he might have part of the migration around American Revolution times when "Loyalists" to the King moved to the South.
Has anyone located Cowey's on early passenger lists? My search for the name has yielded only ships captains named Cowey.Do you have a link in the U.K. with a family whose C.W. went to America?HELP!And thanks!
