Hello Sheila,

I wonder if this is Mary L., living with her widowed mother and family in the 1881 census. It looks as though her mother lived previously in the Kent area and her grandmother (Gray) born in Sussex:-

There are quite a few Joseph THOMPSON from Sunderland, in the 1881 census.
