Charlotte Crocket Baillie, born in Edinburgh about April-June 1838; death apparently not recorded in Scotland.(The middle name Crocket is given only on the birth certificate of her daughter Charlotte in 1865.)Aged 3 in the 1841 census in June, aged 12 (“Charlote”) in the 1851 censuson 30 March, when she was a milliner’s apprentice. She was a domestic servant living at 3 Legat’s Land, Edinburgh, when she married Andrew Craigie (journeyman flesher, born about 1838, son of Alexander Craigie, slater, and Sarah Fraser; death apparently not recorded in Scotland) at 11 Dean Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh, on 30 November 1860; minister P. Davidson, Dean U.P. Church; witnesses William Davidson and Mary Craigie. They seem to have lived at 61 Rose Street, 6 Allan Street, and 12 Market Place, during the 1860s. They do not seem to be recorded in Scotland in 1881. In 1891 a Charlotte Craigie, kitchen maid born in Edinburgh aged 49, and married, was a patient in (?), St Giles, Edinburgh. In 1901, a Charlotte Craigie, widow aged 58 and born in Edinburgh, was general domestic servant with Isabella Shiell at 10 Greenhill Gardens, Morningside, Edinburgh. Charlotte Baillie and Andrew Craigie had at least the following children:
(i) Mary Craigie, born at 61 Rose Street, Edinburgh, on 4 October 1861
(ii) Sarah Fraser Craigie, born at 6 Allan Street, Edinburgh, on 13 May 1863.In 1881, Sarah Craigie, aged 17 and born in Edinburgh, was domestic nurse in the family of Thomas Bell at Liddelbank, an 1100-acre farm at Castleton, Roxburghshire; the household included a daughter Bessie aged 3 and a son Thomas aged 2, presumably Sarah’s charges. In 1891, Sarah Fraser Craigie, born in Edinburgh, was a nurse aged “26” in the household of John Todd, livestock agent, and his wife Janet, looking after their 16-month-old son John, at 2 Dick Place, Edinburgh. There is no sign of her marriage or death in Scotland, nor does she appear to be recorded in the 1901 census of Scotland. However, in the English census of that year, a Sarah Craigie, domestic nurse aged 35 and born in Scotland, is recorded in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.Perhaps she was aging more slowly than some.
(iii) Charlotte Crocket Craigie, born at 12 Market Place, Edinburgh, on 13 March 1865; a Charlotte C. Craigie aged 16 and born in Edinburgh was general servant with the Miller family at Millars Close, Dalkeith, in 1881.There is no sign of her marriage or death in Scotland.
