Sister Creighton, O.P. Obit
ADRIAN Sister Mary Creighton, formerly known as Sister Mary John Creighton (Doris Mary Creighton), died on Dec. 19, 2007, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 87 years of age and in the 69th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Mary was born in Detroit, Mich., to Gordon and Mary Ellen (Brick) Creighton. Sister graduated from Visitation High School in Detroit, and received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Applied Music from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian; a Master of Music Degree in Music Education from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., and a Master of Religious Studies in Religious Education from Catholic University in Washington, DC.
Sister spent 32 years ministering in elementary education in Chicago and Joliet, Ill.; Detroit, Bad Axe, Hudson and Iron Mountain, Mich.; Des Moines, Iowa; Bronxville, N.Y.; and Toledo, Ohio. From 1971 to 1982 Sister was Religious Education Coordinator in Melbourne, Englewood and Port Richey, Fla.; Atlanta, Ga., and Saginaw, Mich. During that period she served one year as Pastoral Assistant in Tampa, Fla. Sister was a driver for 13 years for the Transportation Department at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. In 1996 Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center.
Sister Mary is survived by a sister, Patricia Maino of Venice, Fla., and a brother, Joseph Creighton of Southgate, Mich. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Marie Therese Creighton, also an Adrian Dominican Sister.
Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, in the Gathering Space of St. Catherine Chapel at the Dominican Life Center, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian.
