CRESS DNA Project
Hello CRESS Researcher,
My name is David Attride.I am one of the researchers who have been working to better document all known descendants of Rev. War veteran George Cress (1739-1823) along with some other Cress families.
A new chapter has begun in CRESS research.Namely, Y-DNA testing. This is really exciting since it will clear up mysteries of how various CRESS families are related.
When a man has a son, he passes his Y chromosome on to the son. Therefore, a male, direct descendant of Rev. War George, who still bears the CRESS (or CRACE or CRASE) surname, carries the same Y-DNA that George Cress carried 200 years ago.Y-DNA testing is therefore an extremely useful means of proving one's connection to a family. For instance, I have BASSETT in my paternal grandmother's lineage.I am trying to learn what branch of the BASSETTs in Wales I am descended from.I have paid for a 3rd cousin of mine to be Y-DNA tested. The branch of Walsh BASSETTs that he matches will show which family our BASSETTs are connected.
Over the last several years I have come in contact with 10 to 15 folks who are researching their CRESS ancestry but they can not connect to a well documented CRESS family such as:
Rev. War veteran George Cress (1739 PA or Germany -1823 OH)
Johan Nicholas Heinrich Cress (1721 Steinau, Germany -1784 NC)
Philip Cress(1781 - 1841 PA)
Isaac W. Cress (1788 Preston Co., VA - ??)
Thomas Jefferson Cress (ca 1807 - 1838 Preston Co., VA)
Jacob Grass Sr. (bef 1745 - 1789 Augusta Co., VA)
For the first time, I am asking folks on this list for a donation, to help fund further CRESS DNA testing.Glen Cress has spearheaded this effort and I have made a $50 donation toward his CRESS DNA fund.Glen has located 5 candidates for testing (and more are needed) but since each test costs $189 the expense is significant if borne soley by the person providing the DNA sample. Many of you are like me, you are not a male CRESS so can not provide a sample helpful to CRESS research.I am hoping that at least some of you will be financially able to help move our research forward.
To find out more about DNA testing in general, go to this link:http://www.familytreedna.com/http://www.familytreedna.com/
To find out about the CRESS DNA project, at the webpage above, type in CRESS in the "Search a DNA project" in the upper right corner and click SEARCH.It will take you to a page of search results.Click on the Project named Cress and it will take you to a page giving more details about the CRESS DNA project.
To learn more about the current results of CRESS DNA testing, contact me and I will provide attachments that will show the results of the testing that has covered 5 individuals so far.
A key CRESS family missing from the current DNA testing is the family of Johan Nicholas Heinrich Kress (who settled in what became Cabarrus Co., NC in the late 1700s).We have found a possible donor for that family.Another area where DNA testing will help is to determine what CRESS family Jacob Robert Cress (born ca 1832 NC) belongs.
There are several ways you can donate to help this effort.
Here is the first method:
Once you get to the CRESS DNA project on the webpage mentioned above, click on www.familytreedna.com/public/cressdnaproject
This will take you a page titled:
Cress (and variant spellings) DNA Project
click on the hyperlink on the left:
Contribute to the Surname Project General Fund
This provides info on how to pay via check in the mail; PayPal or Credit Card.
The second payment method:Send a check to Glen Cress (like I did). His address is:
Glen Cress
10 Windcreek
Friendswood, TX 77546
Tel. (281) 482-1310
The third method would be you to send me a check and then I will forward payment to Glen.
Regardless of the method that you choose, I would like to further encourage folks to donate by offering to provide the donors with something from me to say thanks. At the previous CRESS Reunions I have provided reports on the descendants of Rev. War George Cress on CD.The report covers about 5,000 people who represent all known descendants of George Cress. For anyone that contributes $25 I will send them a CD with this 1,300 page report.
For anyone who donates $50 I will send you a CD with this 1,300 page report and for the first time I will provide a Gedcom file of my entire CRESS/CRACE/CRASE database. This very large database includes about 17,000 people.
For anyone who donates $75 or more, I will send you a CD with two of the above files and I will include a scan of every page of the 725 pg book edited by Edgar Cress “The Descendants of George Cress” published in 1985.I sell hardcopies of this book at each Cress Reunion for $35 and it will take me 25-30 hours to scan it page by page but I want to provide an additional incentive for the larger donations.
If you donate via Family Tree DNA or directly to Glen Cress, please e-mail me so I can send you the appropriate gift for helping.
