The CRESSWELLs of Medstead, Hampshire, UK
Dear All
Hi there and hello again to those who already know me.To the latter, sorry I've not been in touch for a while, but I'm feeling much better now and able to get back to researching this family again.
My maiden name is CRESSWELL and I'm related to the Hampshire CRESSWELLs.My great grandfather was Edward George CRESSWELL, eldest son of Edward Frederick CRESSWELL and Mary Ann MASTERMAN, born 1885 in Soberton, Hampshire.Edward Frederick was one of the children of James and Ann (nee BONE) CRESSWELL who were based in the Medstead/Alton area. Part of this family are the ancestors of the Nelson CRESSWELL.I, myself, was born in Winchester, Hampshire, but it wasn't till I moved out of the area that I discovered my Hampshire roots to the family.Typical.
Any thoughts on the origin of the name of CRESSWELL for the Hampshire branch yet?I've yet to find any roots into the more northerly families, towns and villages called Cresswell in England.May be this family name originates because of a local connection only, given that some earlier branches appear to have been CROSSWELLs in the 18th century. My thoughts that CRESSWELL as a local name arises because Medstead is near to the cress farms at Alresford and that one derivative of the name is "CRESSDWELLER" - someone who lives near to cress wells.Being an agricultural lot, perhaps this is the case and the original name was something else, like CROSSWELL or something different.
Anyway judging by the archives, some of my ancestors should ring bells, so looking forward to "speaking" to lost cousins.
Good luck hunting
Regards
Julie Williamson
