I had a hard time discerning the time frame in your message and Janet's. Perhaps this will be helpful - perhaps not. However Crewdson is a very unusual name. While researching my ggggrandfather, Isaiah Stout, I found the following entry in the 1850 census for Albemarle County, Virginia:

Isaiah Stout 82M farmer real estate value: $8000,
Wilfred 72F,
Lucy 30 F
Sarah 28F
Elizabeth 24F
Ann Crewdson, 12F
Fanny 2F

All were shown as being born in Virginia. However I believe that there is an error here and Isaiah was actually born in New Jersey. I have to believe that Ann and Fanny were granddaughters whose mother ( and perhaps both parents) were dead.
