Jacob H. Crites & Rosanah C. Shering of Bollinger County, MO
I’m investigating what appears to me to be the increasingly certain possibility that the Rosanah C. Shering, reported marrying Jacob H. Crites in Bollinger County, Missouri, on 28 August 1866, was a sister to my paternal grandmother’s grandmother, Elizabeth (Shearing) Crites Virgin.
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society transcription of the 1850 census of Cape Girardeau County lists this household:
Dwelling 1340
SHERON, Drucilla, 50, female, b. VA
SHERON, Elizabeth, 18, female, b. KY
SHERON, Roana, 16, female, b. KY
SHERON, Drucilla, 10, female, b. MO
SHERON, Mary, 7, female, b. MO
This wasn't a Sheron household, but a Shearing household. Virginia-born Drucilla Sheron was my great-great-great grandmother, Drucilla (--?--) Shearing, the widow of Moses G. Shearing.
I suspect that the 16-year-old Roana Sheron was Rosanah C. Shering.
Elizabeth Shearing, aged 18 in 1850, would soon marry Andrew Jackson Crites, a son of Joel Crites. After Andrew Jackson Crites died, Elizabeth (Shearing) Crites married Enoch Virgin, the son of Samuel Virgin and Fanny (Hahn) Virgin. Enoch and Elizabeth Virgin were my great-great grandparents.
By 1860, Elizabeth Shearing had wed her first husband, Andrew Jackson Crites. That year, they were counted in this Bollinger County household:
Dwelling 458
CRITES, Andrew J., 26, male, b. MO
CRITES, Elizabeth, 26, female, b. KY
CRITES, Joel M., 6, male, b. MO
CRITES, Permenta C. [Arminta C.], 4, female, b. MO
CRITES, George W., 8/12, male, b. MO
CRITES, Jacob H., 23, male, b. ?
CRITES, Michael, 16, male, b. MO
CRITES, Adam, 13, b. MO
CRITES, Susan C., 10, female, b. MO
Before Andrew J. Crites died in July 1862, he and Elizabeth would have one more child, Drucilla Jane Crites (b. Nov 1861). I'm sure she was named after her Shearing grandmother.
I assume that the Jacob H. Crites living in the Andrew J. Crites household in 1860 was the same Jacob H. Crites who is reported to have married Rosanah C. Shering on 28 August 1866.
Who were Jacob H. Crites’ parents?
What was their connection to Andrew Jackson Crites?
Are Michael, Adam, and Susan Crites siblings of Jacob H. Crites?
Was Rosanah C. Shering a daughter of Moses G. Shearing and Drucilla (--?--)Shearing?
