This is something about which I would like to know more. Can you help me locate that DNA project and whatever else? I have been working with the Montgomerys for several years since I more-or-less drifted from Crockett research. I know of one Alexander and Mary (Nevin) Montgomery with a daughter, but nothing else fits.
Alexander Montgomery [ca 1700-1746] m: Mary Nevin (sister of William Nevin). Along with brother-in-law William Nevin, Alexander Montgomery patented 650 acres on 18 April 18 1744 in Londonderry Township, Chester Co, PA. At this time he appears to have been living in New Castle County, DE, for the records show that the will of Alexander Montgomery, of Mill Creek, dated "September 10, 1746, gave his moiety of the land to his sons William and Daniel they paying something to the other children."
Alexander and Mary Montgomery left several sons and one daughter, Margaret Montgomery [b: ca 1740] who m: Thomas Strawbridge. Their daughter Christiana Strawbridge m: in 1791 cousin Daniel Montgomery [ca 1765-1831], son of William [3 Aug 1736-1 May 1816].
Margaret's brother William [3 Aug 1736-1 May 1816] was very prominent in his day. William Montgomery grew up in Londonderry Twp, ChesterCo, PA. He was a Rev War colonel. Left Chester Co in 1777 and settled in Northumberland Co where Danville was built. He became the first militia general of Northumberland in which post he was succeeded by his son Daniel [ca 1765-1831] for whom Danville, PA was named.
Margaret and Thomas Strawbridge were in Londonderry Twp, Chester Co, PA, in 1771 when Alexander's heirs partitioned the estate. "Moses Montgomery of Marlborough Township in Chester County and Province of Pennsylvania, Shopkeeper, William Montgomery of Londonderry Township in the County and Province of afs'd, Yeoman, Daniel Montgomery of the City of Philadelphia, Ship Painter, Thomas Strawbridge of London Derry Township in Chester County and Province afforesaid, Tanner, and Margaret his wife, all of the one part and John Montgomery in Mill Creek Hundred and County of New Castle upon Dellaware, Yeoman."
I am not able to connect these to McBride or McCurdy or even to the area which became Cumberland Co, PA, including the part which became Perry Co, PA.
1771, Dec 24: William Crockett who m: Margaret applied for 200 acres and for 50 acres in Greenwood Twp, Cumberland Co at the time, now Perry Co. One was for 50 acres on Wild Cat Creek at the mouth of Buffalo Run. The other for 200 acres adjoining land of John Bringham.
1773, Aug 6: Survey for land on Wildcat Run (Survey, K, 157) shows William Crocket 279+ acres adjoining lands of Jacob Gardner, and vacant land. Most of the land is on the west side of Wild Cat Run. Based on two warrants dated 24 Dec 1771. Surveyed 6 Aug 1773.
1775, April 28 (Deeds D, 234-35): Cumberland Deed D, 234-35): George Sweezey of Rye Twp, to Thomas Finley, of Carlisle, 300 acres in Greenwood Twp, in Wildcat Valley, adjoining lands of William Crocket on the east, Peter Rush on the north, William Patterson, and Cocolamus Hills.
1793, Nov 23 (Survey C-228, 34): Survey for John Sweesey in Greenwood Twp on Wild Cat Creek shows "Heirs of William Crocket" adjoining lands of John Sweesey and John Taylor.
1794, June 18 (Patent P-21-305): William Crockett had taken out two warrants on 24 Dec 1771. Surveyed 6 Aug 1773. Based on these warrants, 279 acres were patented to James Crocket and Samuel Utter, "administrators of the said William Crockett deceased", who died intestate, "In Trust for the heirs and Representatives of the said William Crockett deceased". The tract was named "Confidence".
William was killed by lightning while ploughing his field.
There was one Robert McCurdy who had a warrant (M-806) dated 23 Aug 1793 to survey 100 acres in Wild Cat Valley, adjoining land of the heirs of Michael Crale and Ramsey's survey
The only Daniel Crockett (Crockatt) of whom I have a record was born in 1744 in Charleston. That is too early to be relevant. His grandfather Daniel was living in Scotland as of 1749. His father, John, was a prominent Charleston merchant.
Surfing for McCurdy, I find claims that John McCurdy "was born 1701 in County Antrim, Ireland, and died 1761 in Silver Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania." Married first to Unknown and second to Margaret Montgomery about 1751. They were parents of Jane (1753) who m: William Martin and Robert (1755) who moved to Ohio. From same source, John had a son by his first wife. WILLIAM2 MCCURDY (JOHN *1) was born Abt. 1735, and died 1770. He
married UNKNOWN. Child of WILLIAM MCCURDY and UNKNOWN is: i. ELIZABETH3 MCCURDY, b. 1768; m. WILLIAM HUNTER, Bef. 1789, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [Copyright © 1997 by Jane A. Hodgson. This copy contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives.]
The son William McCurdy of Hopewell, made LW&T dated 13 Oct 1769, probated 6 April 1770. Wife: Jeane was to have the remainder from the sale of personal estate after a warrant was obtained for the 200 acres he lived on and 100 acres adjoining. She was allowed the whole use and benefit of the place he lived on during the children's minority. After that, she was to have one-third of the profits of the place or of the sale price. Daughters Elizabeth Charlton and Jean Crocket were each to have one-third of the 200 acres and one-third of the 100 acres. If either daughter were to die as a minor, then that daughter's share would go to his wife. Executor: Benjamin Blyth. Witnesses: Benjamin Blyth, Margret Dunlop, and William Campbel. Jane [Jean] McCurdy married next between 1770 and 1775 to John Walker. During that time, Jane Crocket McCurdy died as a minor, and her share reverted to her mother Jane who in 1775 sold both her own third and daughter Jane's third to William Sterret. Land was near South Mountain.
I looked at just enough about the Long Canes McCurdys to wonder how thiscould be the same family.
What a tangle!
