Hi Barry
I am distantly related to John MacDougall CROMAR as his mother Alexis CROMAR nee McDOUGALL was the sister of my GGG Grandmother Agnes (Nanacy) McDOUGALL.

Your John McDougall CROMAR was born on 24 Apr 1862 in Govan, Glasgow, Lanark, the 7th or 8th child of David CROMAR, a Restaurant Waiter and later Master Draper b. 4 Apr 1820, Aboyne, Aberdeen and who died 1868, Glasgow - and his wife Alexis McDOUGALL, ch. 10 Mar 1826, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.

David CROMAR and Alexis McDOUGALL when both were living in Aboyne, Aberdeen around the late 1830's. David CROMAR's father George was a Shoemaker and Postmaster there and Alexis McDOUGALL was living in Aboyne with her father Alexander McDOUGALL a Supervisor of Excise who had been posted there from Kilmarnock, and her mother Margaret FISHER. Following her father's death in 1847, Alexis moved to Glasgow where on the 1851 census she is shown as a 'Cutter in a Warehouse'. She married David CROMAR on 27 Aug 1851 in Glasgow.
They had between 9 and 11 children (still reseraching this)bewteen their first daughter Louisa Mitchell CROMAR born 6 Oct 1852, Gorbals, Glasgow and their final child, George CROMAR b.18 Nov 1867, Cathcart, Renfrewshire, just before David CROMAR's death in Cathcart.
Alexis remarried on 2 Nov 1870, Glasgow to Robert Meikle Newson LINDSAY, b. 1843, England and shown as a Student of Divinity. He later became a Teacher of English. He pre-deceased Alexis.
Alexis died 14 Jan 1891 Gorbals, Glasgow. Prior to her death she had a drapery store in Glasgow. Many of the McDougall's became drapers.
I have additional information about her brothers and sisters and her children and some of her grandchildren.

Alexis's father was Alexander McDOUGALL b. 13 Nov 1787 St Nicholas, Aberdeen d. 7 Nov 1847.
Alexis's mother was Margaret FISHER b abt 1791, Tarbert, Argyll and d. 13 Dec 1876, Hamilton,Lanark.
They married 30 May 1812 Glassary, Argyll.

Alexander McDOUGALL's father was William McDOUGALL also a Supervisor of Excise b. abt 1760 and d. 10 Oct 1821. His mother was Janet LINDSAY b abt 1760.

Margaret FISHER's father was Duncan FISHER, a farmer in West Tarbert, Argyll and her mother was Nancy McCALMAN from Muckairn, Argyll.
They married on 31 March 1788 Kilcalmonell/Kilberry, Argyll.
And that's as far back as I've got so far.

Please let me know if you would like any further info. I'd be interested in learning more about Alexis's CROMAR children.
Diane
