John Cromie 5/14/10
I was pleased to be notified of your message and know you are Maxwell's son.I corresponded with him years ago and he sent me the phamplet you mentioned.I do not believe it was the original. My recollection is that I returned it to him, but I have spent a lot of time looking for it and the letters. So far no luck, but since genealogists are instructed not to toss anything I must still have it.
I did not realize that your John Cromie was invoved in the mining endeavours.I feel sure he stayed aboard the ship and probably went across the Isthmus of Panama after changing ships in Cuba, as many did rather than the very long trip by covered wagon to CA. Then he must have gone from CA to Melbourne directly as many ships did by then. His trip to the Klondikemust have been another trip as that strike took place about 1889.Since you have diaries I'd be interested in learning more.My g.g.f. Nathaniel Grosvenor Phillips went by ship to CA in 1851 & changed ships in Cuba.
It's wonderful to hear from you and please give my regards to your Dad.Yes, we are lucky to know that our families came from Rathfryland & were members of the Free Presbyterian Church there. When the McBrides came in 1854 they had to return to Liverpool afer a ship wreck and take the Beejapore to NYC, a very hard journey. All the best Nancy Wood in CA
