Charles,Thanks for that explaination. I was looking at all the information I could find on the Cronan surname. I have just submitted yDNA to the Cronin FTDNA site for testing. There is not a Cronan site, but we may be from the same group.I should get the results in a few weeks. I have genealogically traced our Cronan's back to Bumcombe Co., N.C. in the 1790's; Habersham Co., GA then they settled in Dahlonega, Lumpkin Co., GA.(Some of these Cronan's went to Alabama and Tennessee) There were three sons born to this family around 1795, and I have not found their given names.I have saw census reports on Ancestry.com with Cronan's in California and wondered if they could have gone that far.
Our ancestors came from 2 brothers born around 1800 in SC&NC(Hiram and James Cronan). There must be an Elijah, John and Joseph because these are given names that continue in these two Cronan family descendants names.
I am very grateful for your post because DNA has shown some of my other ancestors did not carry the DNA of their surname...but so far we cannot find records to show anything except they are in haplogroup F. Your post and genealogical information will help other Cronan's and Katz's testees.Thank-You
