I have no connection to these surnames at all, but found this article in latest Rootsweb review most interesting, thought you would too.
"Quilting Together a Story
By Sue Caraway [email protected]>
I am a quilter with a "thing" about heirloom quilts. I recently
purchased a quilt top at my local antique store in Livermore, California
that had 14 blocks with embroidered names on them. As I prepared to
finish this small quilt, I couldn't help thinking about the names and
wondering who these people were. I went to RootsWeb.com and looked up a
couple of names.
One in particular resulted in only one hit at SSDI (Social Security
Death Index) http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/
It was a Polena HOLLAND, who had lived and died in Benton County,
Arkansas. With this one small piece of information, I began looking for
others who might have been from Benton County. In the space of a couple
of hours, I had tied six other names to this county. They were:
--Sarah ABERCROMBIE, born 1853, died 1946
--Della CRONE, born 1885, died 1967
--Polena HOLLAND, born 1888, died 1972
--Minnie O. JOHNSON, born 1864, died 1937
--Mary A. LOCKE, born 1851, died 1940
--Callie PAYNE, born 1862, died 1943
--Robert H. PAYNE, born 1856, died 1937
The other names on the quilt are: Doriece ALDRIDGE, Jimmie CRONE, Hazel
B. JOHNSON, Mary LOTT, [--?--] McPALMER, Birdia Payne WHITE, Lissa
SHIELDS, and Marie STORY.
>From this information I was able to estimate the date of the quilt to be
between 1905 and 1920. I am going to make a label with this information
for the back of the quilt. It is a small thing, I guess, but I know
these were "real" people who started this quilt and now I get to finish
it. Thanks to RootsWeb for the great resources available to research
something as benign as this project."
