Bill,
Got your email but I wanted to add to the thread on the post that Doug started on the website for the benefit of others who may like the info.
Below is the text of my email response to Doug:
Hi, Doug, It is awesome to hear from you! Sorry I'm just responding, but I
haven't checked my email in a couple days.
I've heard my dad talk about Uncle Elbert and Aunt Fredia. I knew they had
children, but I didn't know anything about them. The only relatives on my
dad's side that I kept in contact with as a child (I must confess I've lost
touch with them as an adult) is Uncle Bussie's family. I lived with my dad
and stepmom when I was about 14 or 15 years old, for a few months. They
lived across the street from Grandpa's house up on the hill. When I lived
there, Uncle Bussie and his family lived in Grandpa's house and I spent a
lot of time with them. You may already know this, but their family was:
Uncle Bussie and his wife, Aunt Judy (who passed away from a heart attack, I
believe, like ten or fifteen years ago). Their children were: Eugene,
Bonnie, Becky, Ruth, Charles, Johnnie and the youngest, a girl whose name I
cannot recall (it was something like Elly Jean). Anyway, as you said, last I
heard Uncle Bussie and a good portion of his kids were still in the area,
although I believe they no longer live in Grandpa's house. I'm sure his kids
have children, but I know nothing about them. I saw Uncle Bussie at my dad's
funeral, but that was ten years ago, and I haven't seen him since.
Oh, also I kept in touch a little with Aunt Hazel many years ago. She has
two boys, but I can't recall their names. I heard she passed away a few
years ago. She was living in St. Louis, I believe.
In years past, I went with my dad to a family reunion at the city park in
Fredericktown, Missouri. My mom always called it the Croney family reunion,
but I think it was actually a Doris family reunion. Have you ever been to
that? I recall that there was someone who had a "Li'l Red Express" truck. I
was fascinated by it, because I had a plastic model I'd put together of the
exact same thing. It would be wild if you were the one who owned it (or one
of your brothers). I seem to recall that it belonged to one of my cousins.
As for my dad, Elmo: His full name was Estel Elmo Croney. He went by Elmo
for the same reason I go by Lee; "Estel" is often confused with "Estelle",
the female name (my full name is Estel Lee Croney--I was named after my dad
and grandpa). To this day, I still get junk mail addressed to "Ms. Estel
Croney." Even from birth, my parents called me "Lee" and I'm glad!
Apparently my dad felt the same, as he went by his middle name, too.
Anyway, my dad passed away in July or August of 1995, due to health
complications. He was 76, I believe (I think his birthdate was 8-15-1918.
I'm sure about the month and year--not sure about the day). He and my mom,
Vicki Jean (maiden name: Tindall) divorced long ago, when I was only a
couple years old. He then married my stepmom, Elmira (I don't know her
maiden name), and they were married till his death in '95. For the last 5 or
10 years of his life he and she shared a room at a nursing home in Piedmont.
I visited them periodically until his death, and she became cold toward me
after that. I called several times and they said she refused the call.
Elmira and I didn't get along well when I lived with them in the '80s, but
as adults we seemed to get along okay. Perhaps she was just being tolerant
as long as my dad was alive. Who knows? At least I tried to maintain contact
after he passed away. I heard that she died a year or two ago.
My mom, Vicki Jean, passed away in July of 1999. She was only 53. She had
neglected her health most of her life and it finally caught up with her. You
name it, she had it. Diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure and
cholesterol, etc. It was quite a blow to let her go. I certainly miss her. I
miss my dad, too, but especially I miss my mom, because we were of course
closer.
I didn't really follow a lot of my dad's side of the family because after he
and my mom's divorce back in the '70s, she got custody of me, and I only saw
him like once a month as a kid, except in the summer, when he would get me
for something like two weeks, and he would take me down to see Grandpa and
Grandma Croney in Clubb. She (Susie) died when I was quite young, but I
still remember a little of her. I remember she had flaming red hair. Grandpa
Lee I remember a little better, because I was like twelve when he died. I
remember he was a big man, who was short of breath a lot. I have heard that
he was well repected by people, and I wear his name with pride. I, too, am a
big man (6'4" and 350 lbs), and I like to think I am like him. Did you know
him well? I would love to hear stories or info about him.
I guess you know that I am the only child my dad ever had. I do have two
siblings on my mom's side (same mom, different dads). I have an older
brother, Ron Tindall, who is 42, and a younger sister, Glenna Wells, who is
24. I am 38. I have been married for 17 years to a wonderful woman, Diane
Marie. We live near Springfield, MO. We have no children. We wanted them,
but God knows more than we do,
and we prayed for His will to be done, so we trust that it was supposed to
be that way. We have children in our lives; I'm a portrait photographer, so
I work with kids all the time. She has worked in the nursery at church, so
she got plenty of "kid-time" there. What is cool is that we get to play with
them and have fun, then they go home and mom and dad have to deal with
everything else. It's kind of like we skipped "parent" and went right to
"grandparent." Not a bad deal, really!
I always assumed that the name Croney was Irish, because I'd heard the name
"Cronin" and knew it was Irish, so I figured Croney was a variation of it.
However, a few years ago I learned that Croney isn't Irish; it's Scottish.
In fact, it isn't a variation of anything; it's an original Scottish name. I
suppose you have done research so that info may not be new to you. I haven't
really gotten into geneology (I stumbled across your post by accident after
"Google-ing" my name to see what I'd find). If you know anything more,
particularly ancestors before Grandpa Lee (I know nothing before him), I'd
love to hear about it.
One more thing; I discovered there are a LOT of Croneys around West Plains
and Dora, Missouri. I even went to one of their family reunions in Dora and
talked to several people there, and we exchanged names of ancestors and
relatives, but we just couldn't seem to connect any. I'm sure we are kin,
just because of the relative proximity and same spelling of the name, but
just how I do not know. I just thought that if you are doing geneology
research, that might be helpful info.
Take care and God bless,
Lee Croney
