Hello Pamela! Thank you very much for mentioning the OC Museum. It is a great site and I have gotten much information there. My Kendall was born around 1770-1780, so the 12 year old listed must be a nephew or a cousin. I believe the later ones were indeed Kendall. I wish I had more info on the guardianships...were the orphans usually placed with relatives, or just neighbors who had a skill to teach and benefitted from free labor? The only earlier listing I have found is for a Kendall Cropper who applied for a Revolutionary War pension,(for his father?) which I am going to try to find as I don't know anything about them either. I also just discovered a new (to me, maybe not to you!) site called Mocavo.com which is a search engine that eliminates anything non-geneaology related. I only found it yesterday, so I'm not sure how effective it's going to be but it's worth a look if you haven't used it. Since your John Wise and my Kendall Cropper lived in Snow Hill and were roughly the same age, I'll keep an eye out for anything about John Wise as I continue searching for Kendall's parents. Thanks again for your info! Roberta.
