Tim, thank you for your reply. The links and info you provided have helped me piece together a lot of information.

After my first post, I found Valois Crossley's birth certificate from 1940 (obviously obtained by him as an adult). His birth certificate states the same information that I found in the letter that he wrote:

Name: Valois Earl Crossley
Born: July 23, 1894 in Perrinton MI
Father: Charles Clarendon Crossley
Mother: L. Jane Galloway

The birth certificate was typed, but written in below his typed mother's name was the spelling "Laudusky". I'm under the impression that Valois knew how to pronounce his mother's name but didn’t know how to spell it.

Here is the information I have found on Lodusky Jane Galloway:

Born: February 9, 1865 in either Michigan or Canada
Father: David Galloway
Mother: Sarah Alice Patterson (or Sarah Ann Patterson)
First husband: Solomen Broadbeck (m. December 3, 1880)
Second husband: Charles G. Crossley (m. July 23, 1888)
Third husband: David Ceaser (m. November 5, 1906-1912, her death)

The 1871 Canada census lists Lodusky as being six years old at the time, living with her mother Sarah Ann Patterson, 23, who was married at the time.

According to the 1900 U.S. census, Lodusky had six children, apparently all sired by Charles Crossley. I have been able to find info on five of them:

Sanford Crossley, b. 1886
Nina V Crossley, b. 1889
Lucile Mae Crossley, b. 1892, d. 1985
Floyd J. Crossley, b. Dec 1893
Valois Earl Crossley, b. July 23, 1894, d. January 16, 1960

The 1900 U.S. census lists Lodusky as “Lodusky Crosley” and has her listed as being married for 19 years and as the head of household. It states that she has six children, four of which are listed:

Sanford Crosley, b Dec 1886
Nina V. Crosley, b. July 1889
Lula M. Crosley, b Feb 1893
Beloice Crosley, b July 1894

No information on her then-husband, Charles, is listed in the 1900 census. I have found more information on him that I will list in a follow-up post. It has been known in my family that Charles was a drinker towards the end of his life and that he died by getting hit by a train while walking on the railroad tracks.

The 1910 U.S. census has Lodusky listed as “Ladusca J Ceaser”, with David J. Ceaser as her husband/head of household and a Floyd J. Crossley, age 16, with a relationship of “step son” to the head of household.

According to her death certificate, Lodusky died on July 9, 1912, 6pm in Fulton Township, Michigan of carcinoma uteri, aged 47.,391341
