Sorry for the delay in responding to your posting.
I do not know if John R. Croston was related to Francis Croston or William H. Croston.I have not been able to locate any information on about John R.'s parents or siblings.
John R. Croston married Fannie J. Topham 06/12/1851 in Boston at St. Stephen's Chapel [Episcopal], so presumably he and his wife were Protestants. They had a son, William Henry Croston, born 12/1854 in South Boston, died of scarlet fever 11/29/1857 in South Boston. The name similarity suggests that William Henry and William H. may have been related.
William Henry's sister, Mary Jane Croston, born 07/05/1852, died two days after her brother on 12/01/1857, also of scarlet fever.Their joint grave is at Hawes Burying Ground in South Boston.
John and Fannie Croston's third child, Fannie Topham Croston (my maternal grandmother), was born 10/04/1859 in Boston and died 05/09/1929 in Chicago.
John R. Croston lived at the following addresses in South Boston: 5 Second Street (1852); D Street near Athens (1856); 163 Fourth Street (1858); 285 Second Street (1860); 86 Third Street (1861); and, A Street, corner of Third (1865).
I will let you know if I learn more.
