Hi, John Croucher in my family tree. Have the following info:
Notes: Elizabeth Croucher was not married when her son John was born. Elizabeth was most likely a servant for the Whitnalls when she became pregnant to John Whitnall. When John Croucher married he stated that his father's name was John Richmond however for a time after John's birth a John Whitnall was paying 1/- week to the Borden "Overseers Of The Poor" towards John's support. It had been determined in court that John Whitnall was the father. On 26/4/1830 a Dr Fentiman was paid 2 pounds for the 'lying in' of Elizabeth Croucher. This probably takes us closer to the date of his birth than the date of his baptism does Shortly after John's birth, Elizabeth was sent by the overseers of the poor to work in the local workhouse. ( Union Workhouse, Milton) While there she was paid 3/6 week and a further 2/- week for John's upkeep.
Elizabeth married John Richmond. I was not aware that she later married John Whitnall??
I have a very poor photo of John Croucher if you are interested, but it may take me some time to find!
