I guess the the first thing is to get some idea of where he lived as without a location it is very difficult.
Obviously try the IGI at www.familysearch.com, but remeber this is neither accurate or complete, but does give a starting point. The search engine they provide does take some getting used to as many selections are invalid, but do perserve with it.
