I just viewed the census for 1870 in St. Mary Parish, James Cruce was living with an Older Black woman and his age was listed as 14, at home, Mexico as birth, but I have a problem with that. If his name had been Jose or Juan Cruce I might believe it, but I don't think he was from Mexico. I still think he may have come in from Mississippi. Just a feeling. I recently was contacted by a Keith Cruce in Alabama. His father was Freddy Cruce (my grandfather's brother). His mother use to say that his grandfather came on a ship to New Orleans as an orphan. From what I saw in the census, that much could be true, although, I wouldn't think that 14 would have been considered as an orphan in 1870. I will continue to follow the Indian lead because I know that one of my Aunt's has proof of the Indian blood. I just wish I knew who had her papers. When I ask about the documents, no one seems to know who has them.
Thanks for your help.
