Meech/Wallbridge history
Family lore has it that our Wallbridge ancestors fought on the wrong side of the Lord Monmouth rebellion against King James II in 1685 and had to flee to the colonies in order to keep their heads, literally. They had to change their name to get out undetected and chose "Meech" (although my family spells it Meach).I wonder if it was their mother's maiden name.Anyway, my closest Meach ancestors settled with other Connecticut transplants about 1840 in Northern Ohio bringing with them many place names such as New London and Litchfield, etc.The Meach name died out with my bachelor gr-gr-uncles in the early 1900s.I would love to hear from anyone who could corroborate or shed light on this story!
