Curtis family flees CT

Looking for info on John Luther Curtis born 1828 in NY or CT. The story is that he was born on a boat on some body of water in New England while his parents were fleeing angry townspeople who were outraged at some article his father (no name) had written criticizing local prominent families. Believe his father was born in CT and that is where the family was fleeing from

Eventually John Luther Curtis went to live with his uncle (again, no name) somewhere in upstate NY, where JL attended medical school. In his last semester, he dropped out and headed west to find gold. He lost contact with his "back East" family due to their disgust with him leaving school for such a "foolish" adventure.
