Hi Howard,
I was hoping you could help or guide me in my search for any info on Nathan Johnson, b. 1791 in Mystic, CT. Until this point all my research has been in Florida or Bahamas but through a DNA test I found out last year he was my GGG Grandfather, born in Mystic, CT and moved to Abaco, Bahamas before 1811, first married Martha Witty in 1811, children unknown if any, she died 1814 and Nathan leaves Bahamas briefly around Sept of 1814 after the death of Martha, may have gone to Canada since the War of 1812 was still going on in US. I think it ended around Dec 1815?
Nathan returns to Hope Town, Abaco and has a second marriage to a Catherine, b. 1793 married before 1816. Don't know if they married in Canada, CT or after returning to Bahamas. They have 4 children: Henry Baker JOHNSON b. abt 1816 Cherokee Sound, Bahamas 1850’s immigrated to Key West, Martha Elizabeth JOHNSON b. Dec 11, 1819, c. June 13, 1820, Abaco, Bahamas, William Gardner JOHNSON b. Dec 3, 1821, c. Feb 23, 1822, Abaco, Bahamas, d. 27 Jan 1902 Key West immigrated to Key West 1845 and my GG Grandfather
Thomas JOHNSON b. 18 May 1824, d. abt 1853 Hope Town, Abaco) planter and seaman, sp: Charlotte M. BETHEL (b. Nov 1830 and they have 3 kids: Belice b. 8 Aug 1848, William Eldridge JOHNSON b. 20 Sep 1850, Great Harbour, Abaco and Emily Ellen JOHNSON b. 25 Mar 1853.
William moved to Port Orange, FL in 1867 and my family still lives there.
Knowing fathers usually name one of their sons after them and within the time frame I did find a Nathan Johnson in the 1790 CT Census, shows 4 males under the free white males under 16 years row. What I would love to find out is — is this his father and mother and other siblings and there fore go back one more generation.
Additional info on Nathan Johnson.
1. Nathan also had a 3rd marriage to a Sarah Curry, m. 1836.
2. Also an entry for Nathan Johnson, Dec 26, 1837, carpenter, listed in the “Passengers who arrived at Key West during the 4th Quarter of 1837”. He does not appear in the FL Census.
3. Nathan Johnson signed a document in 1841 in Bahamas, so he may have returned to Bahamas
4. Nothing after that date.
many thanks
