I don't know whether that is correct or not, although the "three (four five) brothers" tale is usually more tall than true.
Also, at least part of this story lacks veracity.Mark Cullum was a planter in Westmoreland County, Virginia, from a group of Protestants that fled St. Mary's County, Maryland, a short trip across the Potomac, to Westmoreland ca 1650.His wife's family on both sides followed this trend. So he does have a Maryland/Virginia connection.
However he was NOT a pirate - he was commissioned a Ship's Master (Captain) by the King of England of ships crossing the Atlantic from Virginia to England. He was often referred to as "Mr. Mark Cullum" which was a mark of high respect and social standing used very sparingly at the time.
