Caldwell changed to from Coldwell or possibly Culwell in VA, or KY

in the late 1700's or early 1800's. My grandfather's grandfather (or possibly his great, great grandfather) changed the family name from COLDWELL or CULWELL to CALDWELL because a tax collector kept misspelling his name as CALDWELL and my ancestor got tired of correcting it. My grandfather's grandfather was Allen Thomas CALDWELL by at least the late 1880's. A.T. was b.07/12/1824 in Jefferson County, KY. His father Thomas A. was b. 1785 in Virginia. Either could have done the name change. My grandfather, Rex A. CALDWELL said that his branch of the family lost all contact with the rest of his grandfather Allen Thomas CALDWELL's family at the time of the War Between the States. The line of descent I have from my grandfather is: Thomas A. to Allen T. to John to Rex to mother to me. Any information from anyone else descended from T.A. or A.T. would be greatly appreciated as well as any info on their ancestors. Grandpa Rex always said they came from Scandinavia via Scotland. Thanks.
