Thanks for your reply. To be honest, I do not know.Since I got your reply, I spent sevearl hours at the statearchives (I live in Jackson) and got some additional information. Here is what I know:
M.B. Cumby (Combe) married Josephine Standin in 1857.They moved to Arkansas shortly thereafter. In the 1860 census he was listed as being 26 years old, with one child and a birthplace of Tennessee. He enlisted in the Confederate Infantry in 1861 and was killed in 1864.In no records in which he is mentioned is a first or middle name given. Some family member told me it was Barton, but he also told me he was born in Corinth, which is apparently not true, so I wouldn't be on it.
There is a John W. Cumby listed in the 1860 census in the Pontotoc Division., but even if my ancestor is related, he was well out of the house by then. This guy does not show up in the 1850 census.
William G. Cumby listed in the 1850 census for Laf. Co. might be a likely candidate, but no M.B. is listed as a child.M.B. would have been 16 or 17 and could have been out of the house, but I just don't know how likely that is.Either way, I don't know enought to speculate.
Any information you have on any of these people would be helpful.
If you ever need anything from the archives, let me know; I go fairly frequently.
