I'm brickwalled! I am searching for the parents of my ggp Edward McNiff b. 18 July 1846-51 Ireland, who emigrated from Liverpool c1861 (he would only have been 9-10 years old and I hate to think of him emigrating alone) and married Rosa Hickman in Montreal in 1872 under the surname MAGAN. Edward could not write and lived in a French speaking community. His eldest children were Clara, James, Joseph and Maud Mary. Many McNiffs, McConniffs, McCunniffs, Canniffs, Conniffs were in Montreal at some point. Anyone searching there, I might be able to help. Edward and Rosa's children were all baptized at St. Patrick's RC with different spellings of the last name in the baptisms.....McKniff, McKneiff, McEniff..in directories, they went by Mackey, Macken and finally Mack. Some of the girls married under Mack.
Found a family in the 1861 Census of Liverpool: Miles and Bridget McNiff who have a son named Edward born about the right time but they seem to disappear. Haven't found them in N. America so I'm wondering if they perished or went back to Ireland. I've zeroed in on Leitrim but Edward doesn't seem to be a common name there and the records for the years I'm seaching seem to be lost.
I've been searching for 25 years and would love some new leads if anyone can help. I'm not getting younger and would love to finish what I started before I perish.
