Cupples of North Carolina - mid 1700's

Looking for info.on any Cupples families in NC in the mid 1700's. Specifically, for any connections to a Richards family. I'm researching the Richards family of Granville>Bute>Franklin Counties,NC (1760-1818) and one prominent figure is Thomas Cupples Richards (b.1774/NC). Could his father, George Richards Sr. have married a Cupples girl?
There was a Rev.(John, I think)Cupples in Bute County in 1766, the same year that George Richards was also in Bute County(both mentioned in court proceedings).
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks,
Brett Barnes
