Nancy - I too am researching the CUPPLES family, and I have found the same info on James which you have found. I think that James may be the father of Samuel. I know that Samuel's mother Elizabeth is buried at St. Louis, and that Samuel had a sister Harriet who married Theodore Fagin. I found
(in "History of the Sesquicentennial of Paxtang Church, Sept 11, 1890") a listing for
a Harriet Newel CUPPLES being baptised on April 11, 1824 in that church. I believe that is Samuel's sister and ties the family to Dauphin Co. again.
I wish we could find where James was buried. Alice in Oregon
