William Curl, Gates & Hertford Co.'s NC

In my earlier post I gave some ancestry on my husband's great grandfather William Curl who married Martha Brown in Gates Co. NC.

I now am not sure of the ancestry of William. He may not have been the son of Edward. It seems from various records that he was born 1867/1868 in Gates or Hertford. He was 3 years old on the 1870 Hertford Co. census and was living with the James Dukes (Duke?) family. On the 1880 census (Gates Co.), at age 12, he was a servant living with a Howell family. He married Martha Brown in 1886 at age 18.

I had believed he was the W.T. (short for William Thomas?) or Thomas on various censuses, but after realizing he was married at 18, I knew W.T/Thomas (was 8 to 10 years older) wasn't my William.

Edward Curle who was the suspected father died in 1870. William still could have been an unrecorded son who was sent to live with other families after his father's death.

Does anyone know anything about William? He and Martha had one son, Gonie Mack Curl. When Gonie Mack was a boy, William disappeared and his family never knew what became of him. That's partly why he's such a mystery, I guess....
