I saw your other post before I saw this one. You are right, your William Curl is not Edward's son, W.T listed in 1860.
Most of my research on the Curl's was done a long time ago and I did not realize how important it was to document information. I don't know why I have Edward's son named William, since he is W.T. in 1860 and Thomas in all other records. Edward's wife and two of his children are listed with her in 1870 in Harrellsville. The oldest, George, is not listed. I checked the 1860 census and found no Curls in the St Johns area of Hertford. If your William was an orphan you may be able to find records of his guardian at the archives or courthouse.
