Tonya, I have seen those other spellings but it seems that most of them in VA or NC (the earliest people we have found,late 1500's) spell it Curling and then it later changes to Curlin. I don't discount the Kerlin/Kirlin/Kurlin etc. spellings when I research, but I don't think I have run across it very much. There are variations of these in Ireland, I believe. And it may also have a German origin with these spellings. I once contacted a Father Curlin in Charlotte NC who said his family was of Germanic origin. Good Luck, Kim Curlin Wettroth
