No Proof however, based on proximity and census data, I would conclude either the James Carnutt listed in the 1840 census or the Bird Carnutt listed in the 1850 census.
If this William's middle name is Reuben then I would lean toward the James since I believe he is Reuben c1765-bef.1825 first son James c1780-aft.1840. Bird was the son of William in Montgomery County, VA who I believe was the brother of Reuben c1765.
