Joseph Currer Townley

My wife's grandfather was known as Currer Townley (born around 1915) but we don't know why. Presumably a Townley married a Currer at some point.

Can anyone make the connection for us and provide any further background? The Townleys lived near Caton, Lancaster in the UK from the mid-1800s, if not before.
