Hi all- Seeking info on Currier relatives in NH in late 18th century, and wondered if anyone could be of help in confirming identity of a Betsey Currier, b. 1776. I'm a 3rd great-grandaughter of Mehitabel (Mehitable; Mehetable) Smith, b. ABT 1805 in Gilmanton, NH and d. 29 Dec 1844 in East Kingston, NH; m. Stevens Sanborn (b. 17 Apr 1806 in East Kingston and d. 12 Apr 1881 in East Kingston). Mehitabel's father is William Smith, Esq. (b. 30 Aug 1772 in Gilmanton, NH). I believe Mehitabel's mother to be Betsey Currier (b. 15 Sep 1776 in East Kingston), based upon Daniel Lancaster's History of Gilmanton.* Lancaster states that William Smith m. Betsey Currier 8 Dec 1801 and had Wiliam, Mehitable, Ezra C., and Isaac E., all of whom but the last have died (as of writing in 1845). This entry on the page is directly below information about Dr. William Smith II of Gilmanton (son of William Smith I of East Kingston) and his wife, Betsey Batchelder, so I think it's likely that William Smith, Esq. is William Smith III (son of Dr. William). I've looked at a lot of online genealogical resources for some confirmation and only find one Rootsweb page on Betsey Currier, with less information that I've listed above. I do, however, find information about a Mehetable Currier, also born 15 Sep 1776 in Kingston, NH, who married a William Smith. On the Rootsweb entries I've found, this William Smith is son of Richard Smith and Sarah Bartlett. Mehetable's parents are listed as Ezra Currier and Mehetable Eaton of Kingston, and her marriage to William Smith is given as 25 Feb 1799. Mehetable and Willam are listed as having six children: William (b. 13 Sep 1802 in Maine), Mehetable E. (b. 7 May 1800), Hannah B. (b. 15 Feb 1805), Almyra (b. 2 Jun 1808), Sarah T. (b. 1 Apr 1813), and Betsy (b. 26 Jul 1815). It sounds like two different couple based upon children, date of marriage, and Williams' parents, but it also seems like a big coincidence that there is a Mehetable and a Betsey Currier, both born the exact same day in Kingston/East Kingston, both marrying a William Smtih and having children named William and Mehitable. Does anyone have any information on these families? I would love to find out whether or not Betsey and Mehetable are the same person and, either way, who their parents are. Any information would be appreciated!
