Windham County People Interested in Death of Edward West Currier (News Article) Date: May 5, 1907 Paper: Springfield Republican Windham county (Vermont) residents have taken more than a passing interest in the announcement of the death of Mr. Edward West Currier of New York, whereby a bequeth of $102,000 becomes available for Williams College and a bequest of $100,000 for Yale University. This money is part of an estate of Mrs. Lura Ormsbee Currier amounting to $400,000 or more, the bulk of which was given to Mrs. Currier's step-son, Edward West Currier for use during his lifetime. Mrs. Currier was born in Brookline,Vermont, the youngest of 10 children of Benjamin and Isabel(Black) Ormsbee. Most of the children were born in Putney (Vermont), where the Black family was prominent years ago. Mr. & Mrs. Ormsbee moved from Brookline to Newfane about a year after Mrs. Currier's birth. Except for a short interval, Mrs. Currier lived there until her marriage to Nathaniel Currier, a native of Amesbury,Mass. and a personal friend of John Greenleaf Whittier. Mrs. Currier became wealthy in the lithograph business when clearing large sums on noted war pictures. When Mrs. Currier died in early 1902, a generous share of her estate became available for charitable purposes and several private bequests were made to people in Brattleboro, Newfane, and elsewhere.
