IN MEMORIAM

Many a heart will be grieved and saddened to learn that Joseph W. Dabbs is no more. He fell a victim to an Apoplectic attack near Delhi, Louisiana on the 4th day of May. The circumstances of his death are truly mournful. His family were anxiously expecting his arrival at his home near this city, and the very letter which brought the unwelcome tidings was, while yet unopened, hailed as the announcement of his immediate return. The seal was no sooner broken, however, than all these bright hopes were blasted--the first sentence conveying the crushing intelligence of his sudden decease. An event so unlooked for has greatly shocked his family and a large circle of friends.

Mr. Dabbs was a son of the Rev Richard Dabbs, a Baptist clergyman, favorably known in his day by a large portion of the people of Tennessee. Virginia was his native State, though by far the greater part of his life was spent at this place, where he was extensively acquainted and greatly beloved. He had nearly reached fifty years of age. Of a portly and commanding figure, pleasing address, genial and generous disposition he was a worthy ornament to his family and to the community. His character was original, and strongly marked, and his bearing was independent and self-reliant. In business he was energetic, trusting with confidence his own judgment and convictions, while his generous nature and pleasant social accomplishments always secured his welcome in every circle. Faults he had it is true, for who is without them, yet they partook so much of the nobility of his nature that “even his failings leaned to virtue’s side.” We can truly record him the highest encomium of departed worth, in saying that his death has created a vacuum which cannot be filled.

A public-spirited citizen, the advocate of every useful improvement, our city will miss his influence. A big-hearted friend to youth and virtue, the counsellor of the struggling, and protector to the weak, many who are indebted to his kind assistance will deplore his loss.

A boon companion, the depth and richness of whose social excellence was constantly refreshing, his immediate Associates will mourn his unexpected departure. A model husband and father, of noble instincts yet withal tender as a woman, his family are inconsolable that his name is stricken from the roll of the living. That he died so far from his home and their embraces, is to them additional cause for grief. While mingling our tears with theirs in heartfelt sympathy, we earnestly commend them to the grace of that God who “tempers the wool to the shorn lamb.” It is a thought we can scarcely realize, that he will no more tread the paths of life, by our side, yet it is too true--he is gone.

“Like a summer dried fountain,
When our need was the sorest”

It shall be our pride and pleasure ever to cherish his memory and emulate his virtues.
