This Charles Dabney's parents were Cornelius Dabney IV and Mary (Molly) Lane of Bedford County, Virginia. He can be found in the personal property tax lists of Bedford County from 1788 through 1814.He moved then to Campbell County, Tennessee, which is just across the state line from Wayne County, Kentucky, where most of his brothers settled.
His children included Cornelius, b. 1790-1800; Thomas, b. 1801/02; Benjamin, b. 1802/03; Charles, b. 1806/07.Some grandchildren are: Benjamin, b. 1810-20, and James, b. 1827. Unfortunately, there are almost no surviving tax lists for Campbell County. However, you can verify most of the above dates in census records on Ancestry.com.
His father Cornelius's parents were not William and Philadelphia (Gwathmey) Dabney of King William County, whose son Cornelius lived in Hanover County all his life.
The most likely father of Cornelius Dabney of Bedford County is Cornelius Dabney III, a son of Cornelius II and Sarah Jennings. He lived in Hanover County until his death a year or so before his father, Cornelius II, who mentions Cornelius III's death in his will dated 1764 and proved in 1765. He left children to whom Cornelius II left a bequest without naming them.W. H. Dabney's history of the Dabneys mentions only two children, John and William, but no daughters. If Cornelius III was born about 1713, as W.P. Anderson suggests in "The Early Descendants of Wm. Overton & Elizabeth Waters," he had plenty of time during the next 50 years to produce more children. He is labelled Cornelius Jr. in the processioning records for 1755, 1759, and 1763 in the Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, which is available in paperback and contains much information regarding the Hanover Dabneys.
