I don't think it's been heretofore mentioned on this thread that those descended from the three D'Aubigne/Dabney brothers (Robert, Cornelius, William) are probably related to Madame de Maintenon.
The three brothers (who fled France as Huguenots) were the great-grandchildren, by tradition in my family and many others, of Agrippa D'Aubigne. Two facts lend credibility to this idea: their father was also named Agrippa (this is well-documented) and of course their great-grandfather, the original Agrippa, was a famous Huguenot hero -- also a Protestant in Catholic France.
But the original Agrippa was also the grandfather of Madame de Maintenon, Francoise D'Aubigne, who was the second wife of the Sun King, Louis XIV -- "apres moi, la deluge," etc. Therefore descendants of the D'Aubigne brothers are probably related to a (somewhat illegitimate) Queen of France as a great-great-etc aunt.
