Charles was almost surely the son of Benjamin Dabney and his wife, nee Nancy Wheeler. A decendent of Charles emailed me the following (I hope he doesn't mind): "My ggggrandfather, Charles Dabney, was born 27 Dec 1797 in KY. If Benjamin is the solid choice for the father then Ben and family were in Ky prior to 1797. I have hypothesized that charles may have been born shortly after the Dabney's arrival in this territory. These were rough and ready people. They were referred to as long rifles. "Charles joined the military in 1812 to fight in the War of 1812. I have Charles pension report and it is an eyeopener. Charles fought in the battle of New Orleans under Capt. Adam Vickrey in Slaughter's Brigade. According to an eyewitness the boys stood toe to toe with the enemy and mowed them down. "After retracing his steps across Indian territory Charles mustered out and returned home to marry Jane "Jennie" Mann, Aug 1821 in Green County, KY. "She died probably at childbirth leaving Charles with a little baby; William Dabney 1824. Charles then married Edith "Edy" Scott 14 Mar 1825 in Travisville, Fentress, TN. They would have five children in addition to William to support. The children's names were Thomas 1 Jan 1826, Elizabeth M. 2 Oct 1828, Jeduthan 2 Aug 1830, Elizabeth 2 Apr 1832 and Nancy 10 Oct 1835. All children were born in Wayne County. "Charles lived out the rest of his life in Wayne county. He died 23 Sep 1878 in Wayne County and is buried at Pleasant Hill Cem. Pleasant Hill church, Wayne Co. KY. He has two markers. The more recent is a military monument commemorating his involvement in the War of 1812. "Edith is not buried next to him. She would join her son Jeduthan in Montgomery Co. KS and is buried there in the family plot at Tyro." Notify Administrator about this message?
