"dit" found in some names.

Hello everyone. I have noticed throughout the posts, that occasionally, Pierre Dagenais is sometimes referred to as Dagenais dit Lepine. I have also seen other names with "dit St. Martin" or "dit Riopelle" Would someone kindly explain to me what "dit" means. I know the English translation from French, but I suspect that is not what it means in this case.

I appreciate any help you can give me, to understand better.

Thanks, Lorraine Dagenais
