Dear Jackie and friends
My Grandsons are Dagenais's. By using Miller's Manual & the films from the Mormon Libraries, I managed to trace their ancestry in Quebec right back to the original French settlers in the 1650's in Quebec; and, in more than one line. You will not need much knowledge of French, because the same words occur time after time. Probably the most difficult part was understanding how to interpret the Mormon LDS Library catalogue use of 'Montreal', since it could mean a)the city, b)the diocese, or c)the district- encompassing all the parishes anywhere close to Montreal.
Good luck, John
