I looked up your John Gustafson in Vilske Kleva on Genline;

Household Examination GID 1605.40.36800

John Gustafson b. 16 Nov 1847
Klara Sophia b. 21 Dec 1847 in Eriksburg
Julia Elisabeth b. 12 Jul 1874
Alma Matina b. 11 Nov 1875
Ernst Natanas b. 24 Sep 1877
John Rikard b. 16 Nov 1879
Gustas Werner b. 19 Dec 1881
Maria Alexandra b. 30 Nov 1883
Anna Olivia b. 7 Nov 1885
Otto Emanual b. 8 Mar 1888

It shows John, Julia, Maria, and Anna emigrated from Vilske Kleva 7 Apr 1888, and for the next Household Examination book (GID 1605.41.54900), the rest leaving 19 Oct 1888. Maybe because little Otto was only a month old when his dad left. I think you are correct that this little Otto is the same one who died 16 Dec 1962 in Fresno.

In the 1920 Census found a matching widow Clara, with son Gust and daughter Anna living at 2014 James Ave N, Mpls, MN just north of Crystal Lake Cemetery. For the same place in the 1910 Census, Richard is also living there. On the 1900 Census I find John, Sofia, Richard, Gust, Maria, Anna and Otto living at 1211 Humboldt Ave N, Mpls, MN. All with the correct ages. On that same page, on the next house number 1212 is Knute Lindquist b. Feb 1875, married to Alma b. Nov 1875, and a son Arnold b. 1898.

No sign yet of where Julia and Ernest have gone off.

Hope this helps.
